The Message of the Bible – Part 4 (Abraham)

Abraham

God’s promise of redeeming humanity through the Seed of Woman remained through the generations after Noah and his son, Shem, until there was a man raised up from Ur of Chaldees. God once again reached down upon the earth to one of His creatures, and instructed a certain man to leave the country of his heritage to a new country where God would bless and grown him and his progeny. This man was not chosen because he was righteous, but because God simply chose Him. Before God chose him, his life was not an example for all of humanity, but rather one that would be used as an example of faith. Thus, this man, Abraham, walked in faith, and as a result was given a promise of receiving land from God, descendants from God, that the Seed (Galatians 3:16) would come through him, and that through his family all the nations of the earth would be blessed. God’s promise to Abraham was ratified upon God’s own character, and therefore was not subject to the rebellious and sinful nature of Abraham or his family. In other words, the promises that God made to Abraham were promised by God to come to pass, and were not based upon the actions of Abraham. The result of such promise meant that no matter how disobedient Abraham and his family became God’s promises still would remain. God’s redemption for humanity would never be based upon man’s character, but always God’s. It is the only way for an eternally holy God to work through a sinful humanity. And so, God chooses to allow sinful men and women to be conduits of God’s character, not perfect examples of God’s character. Always, mankind has needed God to empower them as His ambassadors. It is at this point that the Bible unfolds where the Seed of Woman will come—Abraham.

In time, Abraham’s family grew and expanded until at the end of the book of Genesis they are numbering around 70 people, and were living in the land of Goshen—located in Egypt. They had moved away from the land that God promised to them, and were allowed to incubate and grow under the protection of the Egyptians. During this time, Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, blessed one of his sons with the promise that the King would come from his tribe. Judah’s tribe would be the line through which the authority of God would come. God’s promise of how He will redeem a rebellious humanity begins to narrow through the line of Judah. God’s redemption story began with the promise that a Seed of Woman will defeat sin, which narrowed through the family of Abraham, and is now further narrowed through the tribe of Judah within the family of Abraham. Thus, the tribe of Judah is the line through which God would establish His reign and authority over sin and ultimate reign over the pinnacle of His creation—mankind.
