Yesterday morning, we woke to a nice, steady rain here in D.C. The temps were in the low 60s, and fall was in the air. Nothing out of the ordinary happened until a brief, organic conversation came up with one of my daughters.
She was dressed and ready for school, and I was ready to head to the office. We both found ourselves by the kitchen sink looking out the window, yet pondering the dark clouds from two entirely different perspectives.
She lamented, “Why does it have to be cloudy and raining? I won’t be able to play later if this keeps up.” I responded, “Well, rain and clouds help us appreciate the sun.” She corrected me, saying, “The sun is there. It’s behind the clouds.” To which I replied, “That’s exactly right. The sun remains there behind the clouds, and that shows God is sovereign even over the things we might not enjoy in the moment.” She sighed, and we went about our days.
What’s the lesson for us today?
- Clouds and rain come in so many forms in our lives: Difficult relationships. Difficult jobs. Difficult finances. Difficult health. Difficult thoughts. And more.
- Yet God stands above, behind, beneath, and around every situation. He is not the Author of these difficulties, but He allows them, and He alone has the power and goodness to redeem them.
- Therefore, we can embrace our rainy days, knowing that though they may trouble plans, God uses them to bring life to His created world around us.
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
